    IMPORTANT WORK

This weekend, I worked on concepts for a campaign for auto parts, ideas for a site for a bicycle brand, thoughts on a viral for a major nonprofit, and several internal agency initiatives.  But by far, the most important thing I helped work on (and I just helped -- most of the work was done by someone else)  was this:

Jackson has it right where he wants it.  Weighs right at 5oz -- the limit.  Race this Saturday.  He made it. I'm just happy to be a part of this.

    Some Shots and Some Thoughts

In the spirit of making more things, I've been shooting a bit more.  Got a groovy new lens for Christmas, and shot a lot of stuff while I was down on the farm.  Ignoring the risk of cat blogging, I thought I'd share a few thoughts and shots that came to me. This slideshow contains both old and new work -- the new is very new, taken just in the past couple of weeks.  The lake is shot from the backyard where I grew up.  The beach shots were taken at Daytona a couple of days after Christmas.  The trees are all in my parents' yard. Textures are from my dad's very messy barn.  It's always been messy.  I wouldn't have it any other way.

I learned a lot on this trip.  How much my upbringing means to me, and how much I truly want to pass along some of the more esoteric aspects of it to my kids.  Ok, some people might call them esoteric, while others would call them just plain ol' cracker.  Regardless, I enjoyed being able to pass along some experiences I grew up with, and witness the excitement and interest in the faces of my kids.  Over the course of the trip, we did a ton of things I used to do regularly as a kid.  We shot bb guns, went fishing and ate fish we caught.  We also ate gator tail, frog legs, and catfish we didn't catch, as well as Sugarboo's Barbecue. We did some work in the orange groves, swung on oak trees, cruised the town in the hot rod truck, went to the beach to play in the waves and shoot some skee ball on the boardwalk.  We skateboarded, camped in the yard, and generally had a complete sampler of stuff I used to do as a kid while simultaneously complaining that there was nothing to do.  If I only knew then. I know the kids will remember this trip their whole lives.

If there's a lesson for advertising, it's the one I pretty much always preach -- times and methods change dramatically and rapidly, but good stories are the core that everything is built on -- and they last forever.

    Kid Art

Georgia's art.  Robot.  6.5 feet tall.  She had help cutting wood to her specs, hammering a couple of nails, and installing legs.  Two views.

    Fun with animated stills

YouTube's compression sucks.  But this was fun.  A few bursts from a still camera, and a sequential file import.  A couple of filters, and a quick Garage Band track.  The real thing looks a lot better than the YouTube version -- I gotta start posting on Vimeo.
