DigitalBuzz has an infographic on YouTube statistics, because it's YouTube's birthday. I've pasted the graphic below, but definitely read the post.
Turns out YouTube's birthday is the same as mine. I'm thinking, how appropriate, huh? Five years ago, being the web geek I am, I found out about this new thing online called YouTube. When I found it, I immediately got the sneaking suspicion that it might change a few things about the way we produce and distribute content that includes moving imagery.
So I called up a friend of mine in the citrus industry, and told him I was going to make a commercial, of sorts, for him, and that I was going to upload it to this thing called YouTube, and it wouldn't cost him anything, but it might send some people to his site. (His site's pretty bad, btw, but it sells fruit.)
His response: "Yeah, whatever. Go for it."
So I wrote, cast, shot, edited, composed, etc. -- really fast, really cheap, just as an experiment. Really cheap. Crew of one: Me. In my home office, with consumer gear. When I uploaded the thing in January of 06, just a month after the official launch of YouTube, I thought, "Geez, I'm behind the curve here. They're getting thousands of uploads a day already.
Guess I wasn't all that behind. When it went up, Steve at adrants noticed, and other people noticed, and it solidified some of the early ideas I had about how our industry would, is, and will continue to change. Change is good. Happy Birthday YouTube.
Like I said, -- not my best work, but, well...not terrible, either, considering. Oh, and although it's perfectly SFW, for some reason it's been flagged. I just noticed that today -- I haven't watched it in a very long time. Yes, there are exposed navels, but that's it. If it doesn't play you can sign into YouTube and view it here. I'll work on getting it un-flagged when I have some time.
